Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Wilson had ended up on House's couch more times than he could count on one hand so when House showed up in his doorway - Amber's doorway, he corrected in his head because really it was still her home even if she was gone - he decided to let the man in even if he knew House was just there to talk something out. That's how it always was with his best friend, really. The man would talk at Wilson and seem innocent about his intentions but really they were having some strange, subtle philosophical debate which usually gave House the answer he needed for one thing or another. (Sometimes it was the answer to a case, sometimes it was the answer to a personal problem). So when House stepped inside he let out an exasperated sigh, trying to seem as if he'd been sleeping and this was disturbing him.

In truth he himself had been sitting on the couch, staring at the television that was off, thinking of Amber. He wasn't going to admit that, though, even if House brought it up.

"I think you've come to the wrong place, House. Cuddy doesn't live here." He pointed out.

"Then I've come to the right place," said House. "Because I'm not looking for Cuddy." He limped over the threshold and into the center of Wilson's living room. He glanced around for a moment, realizing that, not that long ago, he'd believed he'd never see it again. It was good to be back on better terms with his best friend.

"I was looking for this oncologist I know who lives here," he said. "Maybe you've seen him. Floppy brown hair, pocket protector, few extra pounds..." He smirked. "Ring any bells?"

"I have not gained a few extra pounds, House." If anything, he'd lost weight since Amber had left but for the time being he was simply joking with House. Not trying to point out his own sense of misplacement in the world without Amber nearby. "And my hair is only floppy because you woke me up in the middle of the night." Crossing his arms over his chest he nudged the door shut with his foot before simply standing there, watching his friend.

"Your hair is floppy all the time," House said, rolling his eyes. "And..." He looked Wilson up and down a couple of times. "Alright, alright, you do look skinnier than I thought, I take it back."

He limped over to the couch and plopped himself down on it, spreading out so that he took up the whole thing. "See? Why would I go to Cuddy's when you have this awesome couch for me to lay on? I need to break this one in like the one in your office."

"House, you don't want to be here." Wilson rolled his eyes. Really he just wanted to suffer alone but there was House, deciding to make Wilson's apartment his own apartment in a way. Without a thought to Wilson's own comfort.

Such was House, he supposed.

"What's wrong with your own couch? Or bed, even? I swear if you use that stupid mosquito bite as an excuse..."

"It's not an excuse, it's real," said House. He had had a weird dream about it, but he wasn't about to tell Wilson he'd come running over here to escape his nightmares. That would be pathetic.

"But you know, I have a GPS in my car, and I'm pretty sure if I didn't want to be here, I could have found my way to where I really wanted to be. Maybe you don't want me to be here. But that's something else entirely."

"You are here because you don't want to think about Cuddy." Wilson stated, not bothering to sit down. Instead he remained standing as he was, hands sliding down to rest on his hips. "Which the mosquito symbolizes. Have you actually seen the bug, House? Really?"

"I'm thinking about Cuddy right now," House said. "It's all I seem to do lately. Think of Cuddy. Think of you wanting me to think of Cuddy. Think of Cuddy thinking that she wants me to think of her." He shook his head. "Too much thinking. I don't want to think that much unless it's about a case."

He laughed a bit at Wilson's pose, thinking he looked like a dad scolding his teenage daughter for bringing home a guy named Warthog and announcing she was marrying him. He was so funny when he became indignant like that, and House actually enjoyed getting the man worked up like that. "I don't need to see the bug," he said. "I hear it, and I feel it. That's enough for me." He held up his bandaged hand. "How many imaginary bugs do you know that bite people?"

"I know that a lot of people think a small cut is a bug bite, and then scratch and mutilate it into something worse so no one can tell what it is." Wilson pointed out, still standing with his hands on his hips.

"Why don't you go tell Cuddy about it? Why not tell her how little you want to think? Why not just do like you are so used to."

"You're awfully dense for a Boy Wonder oncologist," said House. "I'm not with Cuddy right now because I am with you. Because I would rather be with you." He shook his head. "I just got you back, I'm not going to screw that up by visiting Cuddy in the middle of the night, when that's what I have you for. Can't have you feeling neglected, you know."

"I'm not going to feel neglected just because you like a girl, House. What are we, best friends in the 7th grade or something?" With a scoff, Wilson finally moved to plop down into his recliner. Since House was taking up the whole couch.

"For us to be best friends in the 7th grade at the same time, I'd have to be the dumbest kid in the world," commented House. "And of course you don't feel neglected right now," he added. "Because tonight I chose you, and not Cuddy. This is the equivalent of passing you a note in study hall and asking you to come over to study instead of going over to watch the hottest girl in school through her bedroom window."

He grinned at Wilson. "Come on, you know you feel special, Jimmy."

"Whatever, House." Even if Wilson did feel a bit special. Even if he wanted to be more special than Cuddy in House's eyes. He wanted, sometimes, when he was tired and lonely for House to lust after him for once. Amber had always been so attracted to him and now that she was gone girls wouldn't even give him a second look.

"Jesus, what's wrong with you?" said House. "Do you want me to leave here and go to Cuddy's? I don't want to be over there. I want to be here. And I thought you might want me here, too, since otherwise, you're alone all the damn time." He sighed.

"Whatever happened to bros before hos, man?" he said somewhat sarcastically. "I thought we were friends."

"No, House, I don't...want you to leave." Shrugging, the man just sort of snuggled into his comfortable, plush chair. "We are friends, you idiot. I just don't want you here simply because you feel sorry for me."

"Who said anything about feeling sorry for you? I feel sorry for myself, not you. I'm being attacked by killer bugs right in my own apartment!" House shook his head. "And I'm not leaving, no matter what you want, so get used to it."

"Right." Wilson shrugged and shifted a bit in the chair to get more comfortable. He wanted to go sink back down onto the couch and keep watching television but House was there now and that was out of the question.

So he was stuck being his friend's entertainment for a few hours. Goodie.

"Do you want me to go?" House said, his tone becoming increasingly annoyed each time he spoke now. "Seriously, I didn't come over to play mind games, or to watch you pout over there in that chair. I came over to see you because...well, who the hell even knows why. But you're acting fucking weird, and it's creeping me out."

"House, I'm just tired." And lonely. And he wished he was in the mood to pal around with House like he would in the daylight hours but really this was his safety net. A place where he could still pretend Amber was just working a late shift and that she'd be home soon so he'd have someone to hold.

House had come in on his time and sort of threw off the balance of Wilson's otherwise melancholy evenings.

"Then go to bed," said House. "That's what people do when they're tired, Wilson. They sleep." He sighed. "And I'll sleep on your couch, or at least rest until I'm awake enough to drive back home. And when you wake up, I'll be out of your way."

"It isn't about the sleeping, House." He looked at the man, frowning a little bit. "You don't...get it." Frustrated, Wilson stood up and made his way to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Gulping it down he set the glass on the counter and moved back into the living room, once more dropping onto the chair.

"With you here I can't pretend that Amber might actually come home." He looked away from House, staring at the blank television.

Well, shit. House hadn't been expecting that. That was...definitely not a healthy reaction. "Wilson," he said, trying to keep his tone even and soothing. "You...you know she's not going to do that, right? I mean...how long have you been doing this? I get that you miss her, but damn, Jimmy. Why set yourself up for that disappointment every night?" He shook his head. "Is that really what you want? You want me to leave you here alone so you can play that little game with yourself?"

"It isn't a disappointment. Once morning comes I feel like I can put myself back in the world and not think about her. Its just at night that I...hope." He scoffed. "At least when I realize how starved I am for affection, I can pretend and have hope that maybe the bush crash was just a bad dream and Amber will step back through that door."

House shook his head. "I'm not going to help you become more fucked up, Wilson," he said. "I'm staying here tonight. If you want to be haunted by ghosts and bad memories, that's fine, but I'm not going home so you can torture yourself." He sighed.

"Jesus, you act like Amber was the only person who ever gave a shit about you," he muttered, stretching out on the couch with his cane lying on his chest. "But really, don't let me disturb your creepy habits. You'll hardly know I'm here."

"Would it be creepy if I asked to stay out in the living room with you? Or more, on the couch next to you?" Wilson asked quietly. Moment of truth time.

"I thought you wanted me to leave," said House, blue eyes wide with curiosity. "Make up your mind, Wilson," he said. "Sleep here, sleep in your bed, sleep out in the street, but make up your damn mind."
