Who: Gibbs and DiNozzo
What: DiNozzo chooses his family over the girl.
Where: NCIS office to start
When: After the episode where he burns Jeanne's letter

It had been a hard day. A child had been returned to its parents; a family reunited and yet when Anthony DiNozzo had to close the file on Jeanne it all felt empty. Earlier that evening he'd taken her letter - the last things of hers he had - and had tossed it in the fire. He had his family at NCIS and they were of greater value to him than she was. Girls would come and go, Tony always told himself, but this family replaced the thing he'd never had. Gibbs was a strong, positive influence in his life who came from humble beginnings. McGee was that little brother Tony had always wanted when he was a child. A little brother to pick on and guide. To push in the mud and then show the best hiding spots in the yard to. Kate had been a sister and Ziva had somewhat taken up that role after Kate's passing. Abby was a light in his life; a little sister of sorts always happy to see him. Always worrying and doting. Ducky and Palmer were the funny uncle and cousin.

Yet none of this brought any peace to his restless soul and even when Ziva, McGee, Abby, Ducky, Palmer (and he thought Gibbs had gone as well) invited him to drinks he had refused. He had claimed he still had paperwork to finish and a few other personal things to tend to. So that is how he found himself sitting in the dark NCIS office with only the backup lights on. Tony was lounging in his office chair, feet up on the desk, gazing up at the ceiling. Jeanne kept running through his mind. Their moments together playing out in his head like a slow movie. It was torture and closing his eyes only made it worse.

However he refused to go home because even there he would remember her. Even if he wasn't laying in her bed a bed made him think of her. That's why he was at the office, in his chair instead of home or out with friends. He needed to think and it couldn't be done anywhere else.

Gibbs honestly startled him and he immediately dropped his feet from the desk and sat up straight, looking at the older man with something akin to shock in his eyes. It faded quickly though and he rubbed the back of his neck a bit sheepishly, shrugging a shoulder in response to the statement.

"I didn't realize you were still here, Boss." Tony commented, now idly shifting papers around on his desk under the idea that he was organizing them. Of course he wanted to be smart and ask Gibbs what he was doing there but he kept his mouth shut, as he'd learned to over the years. A quiet Tony equaled a head that wasn't sore. So he just finally looked back up at Gibbs. "I had some paperwork to finish up." Of course he didn't really and Gibbs probably knew that, since he required everything to be turned in on time. "On another...thing."

Oh smooth Tony. Way to sell your excuse for being there.

Gibbs simply raised an eyebrow at the excuse, not saying anything for the moment while he waited for Tony to get settled again. Part of him was pleased that he could still make his agents jump just by addressing them. "Doing that paperwork with your feet?" he asked dryly. Not that he actually believed for a second that Tony actually had any paperwork to finish. He just wasn't sure why Tony was here, or why he was lying to him.

"I was going to go have a drink if you weren't too busy with that paperwork to join me." It was a lie, he'd had no plans to do anything but go home and work on his boat, but he needed to find out what was up with DiNozzo, so he could change his plans.

"And Tony," he said as he walked to the elevator, "don't lie to me. You're bad at it."

"Right boss. No lying." Figuring he didn't have anything better to do - and it would be more interesting to think over a drink than in the office staring at the ceiling - he got up from his chair and grabbed the bag he always brought along. Slinging it over his shoulder he hurried after Gibbs, sliding past the elevator doors right before they shut.

"Where are we going to drink?" He inquired, wanting to know if they were going to walk to one of the nearby pub-type places or if they were going to drive somewhere. He didn't have a preference, just wanted to know. That and he didn't want to end up going to the same place Ziva and the rest had.
